The Department of Wood & Paper Science (WPS) offers five undergraduate degree programs and four graduate study options — all of them leading to great careers in the wood products, paper and pulp industries, research or academia. We also offer continuing education programs, distance education options for individuals desiring to study from remote locations and hands-on short courses designed especially for busy industry professionals.

WPS welcomes incoming freshmen and graduate students from all around the world as well as transfers from community colleges and other universities. All of our academic programs emphasize hands-on learning in well-equipped laboratories, exciting research opportunities with world-renowned faculty, numerous financial support options plus paid national and international co-op, internship and fellowship opportunities. Service-learning is another important component of our education — as is an emphasis on building a global perspective in wood and paper science by taking advantage of our international study opportunities.

Small class sizes and a close alignment with industry mean WPS students receive a great deal of personal instruction from faculty in cutting-edge issues and learn techniques that will prepare them to immediately contribute to their fields upon graduation. Much of our learning takes place through inquiry-driven activities such as hands-on or problem-based instruction and group or team exercises.

While the WPS community is intentionally small and very supportive, we are part of a thriving, larger university community that offers numerous opportunities for extracurricular activities and comprehensive student services.
