Meet new #NCState24 alumna Laura Tomkins. 👋 🎓 🐺
This spring, Laura graduated from the NC State Center for Geospatial Analytics in May 2024 with a doctoral degree in geospatial analytics. She currently works as a senior atmospheric scientist at Karen Clark and Company in Boston, Mass.
“My decision to pursue this degree at NC State was partially due to the fact that the geospatial analytics program is very unique and isn’t found at many schools. But it was mostly because I had a great relationship with Sandra Yuter, who encouraged me to come back and had funding from NASA to work on a winter storm field campaign. Also, North Carolina is home and NC State is where I earned my undergraduate degree.”

Meet new #NCState24 alumnus JT Chappell. 👋 🎓 🐺
JT graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sustainable materials and technology from @ncstatefb. During his time at NC State, he worked as a laboratory technician at Hodges Wood Products Laboratory, where he will now be serving as temporary business director.
“A valuable piece of advice I would give to anyone who majors in sustainable materials and technology would be to connect with professors. Through my time in the program, I have discovered that they genuinely care about our success and well-being. Whenever I have a concern, whether it’s academic, professional, or personal, the professors have always been there to help me navigate through it. Overall, their mentorship and support have played a significant role in shaping the person I am today.” —@jt_chappell

Meet new #NCState24 alumna Shrusti Patel. 👋 🎓 🐺
This past weekend, Shrusti graduated with a bachelor`s degree in environmental technology and management (@ncstatefer) and a minor in environmental toxicology. Her long-term career goal is to study how environmental and occupational contaminants impact human health.
“Along with spending time in classes, make sure to get involved in different clubs, organizations and communities that can help you grow. The university has incredible resources for students to succeed both academically and personally. Another piece of advice that I would like to spread is to not worry or stress too much about classes, grades or the future and to just be sincere towards your work. Everything else will eventually fall into its place.”

Meet new #NCState24 alumna Julia Egler 👋 🎓 🐺
This past weekend, Julia graduated with a bachelor`s degree in parks, recreation and tourism management (@ncstateprtm) with a concentration in tourism and event management. Julia currently works for @raleighgov as assistant director of the Lake Lynn Park and Community Center.
"Being a part of the James Buzzard Leadership Development Program, we had several opportunities to become better leaders. Since I want to pursue a career in management, it helped me become more aware of my emotional intelligence, strengths and weaknesses as a leader.
Studying parks, recreation, and tourism management allowed me to make strong connections with professors and classmates that have led to unique job opportunities. I was recommended to all of my internships at Twiddy and Company and the Pittsboro-Siler City Convention and Visitors Bureau. I want to specifically thank Jason Bocarro and Whitney Knollenberg for helping me with job advice and with my future." —@julia.egler

Meet Wizaso Munthali, a soon-to-be #NCState24 alumna and #NCStateCNR’s spring commencement graduate student speaker. 👋 🎓 🐺
Wizaso will be graduating with a Ph.D. in forestry and environmental resources (@ncstatefer). For nearly 22 years, she has worked as an environmental expert in her home country of Zambia. She currently teaches in the environmental engineering department at Copperbelt University in Kitwe, Zambia.
“First, I had exceptional academic advisors, Dr. Sills and Dr. Kelley, who showed a great commitment to my cause, and who did not back down from pushing me beyond my comfort zone, identifying my academic shortfalls and providing opportunities for improvement. To them, I was not coming to NC State to get an easy pass. It had to be earned, and there had to be a transformation in my skill set, my thinking processes and the way I approached scientific research. I firmly believe this was achieved.
Second, I had a community of friends at NC State and family outside the U.S. as a support system. Believe me, a good cry, the company and laughter of friends or family helps, even if it doesn’t solve the glitch in your programming code."

Meet Mary (Mimi) Pinyan, a soon-to-be #NCState24 alumna and #NCStateCNR’s spring commencement undergraduate speaker. 👋 🎓 🐺
Mimi will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in forest management (@ncstatefer). After graduation, she will pursue a master’s degree in forestry and statistics at the University of Georgia and serve as a graduate research assistant. Her research will focus on optimizing growth and yield models using computer programming for timber sales.
“There`s something distinct about each of us whether that be our race, disability status, religion, or gender. However, under the roof of NC State’s College of Natural Resources, we all had a chance to learn from a diverse group of students and teachers. The diverse set of majors and interests naturally divides us, but within the college, we are united in our desire to be stewards for the Earth. We’re all different but at the end of the day, it doesn’t have to be a bad thing, so long as you find people who accept and support you, differences and all.”

Bryanna will be graduating with a bachelor`s degree in paper science and engineering from @ncstatefb and chemical engineering from @ncstateengr. After graduation, she will begin working as a full-time remote process engineer within the corporate engineering team of @georgiapacific.
“Use what you have learned from this family and this home. Hold the connections dear to your heart. I want you to right now think of someone in that next stage of life that encompasses what we have learned over these four years — to fight with poise even when the odds are low, to have courage and grace, to care and support those around you.
For me, that person is my mom. She encompasses strength and poise, living life to the fullest and is my pillar of hope. Use that person as your constant reminder of these traits that you hope to hold onto and a role model as you continue to develop into who you are over this next period of life.” — @bryzygirl10

Austin will be graduating with a master’s degree in forestry from @ncstatefer. After graduation, he plans to continue working in forestry and tree improvement.
“Five years ago, I graduated with my bachelor’s in forest management with a plan to go into the private industry to start a career in forestry. A few years later, I left that company to come back to the College of Natural Resources to pursue a master’s degree in forestry with the Cooperative Tree Improvement Program (@ncsu_tip).
Guidance and advice from my family, friends, and faculty and staff at CNR lead me to the decision to come back to the best college at NC State. CNR is a great place to learn and develop lifelong connections. CNR has changed a lot in the last five years, but one thing that hasn’t is the number of great faculty and staff that care about us students and developing us for whatever plans we have once we leave.” —@austinquate
In our sustainable materials and technology program, students learn how to create and manipulate materials derived from renewable, most often plant-based, natural resources. 🌱 🧪
Junior Haley Jenkins (@haley.jenkiins) talks about what drew her to the program and offers advice for students considering majoring in the program.
Congratulations to our own Kate Macleod and Jaxon Davis, recipients of this year’s NC State Sustainability Awards and soon-to-be #NCState24 @ncstatealumni! 🎉
Kate is a senior in sustainable materials and technology, a zero waste intern at @ncstaterecycles and a sustainability programming and outreach intern at @towardzerowaste. At the local non-profit, she helped establish a new Raleigh compost drop-off site. She was also recently honored by the City of Raleigh with a Climate Action Award for Waste Reduction.
Jaxon is a senior majoring in environmental science, and fashion management and product management in @ncstatewilson. He is also team lead for NC State Stewards, a student organization that promotes sustainability on campus. Jaxon co-founded and currently manages the @campusthriftstore, which provides the NC State community with an on-campus sustainable and affordable shopping option.
