Introduction
Swedish students are invited to apply for fellowships supporting doctoral study in forest genetics and forest management in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, College of Natural Resources, North Carolina State University (NCSU), in Raleigh , North Carolina . Nicholson Fellows are prepared for international careers through work on cutting edge issues ranging from conservation of genetic diversity in the tropics to tree improvement and silviculture of temperate and northern species.
Nicholson Fellowships provide full support for four years of study towards a PhD in the NCSU Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources. This includes: (a) US $18,000 annual stipend, (b) all tuition, student fees, and health insurance, and (c) round-trip airfare from Raleigh to Sweden once a year. Most doctoral students spend at least two years in residence at NCSU to complete coursework for their degrees. Research may be conducted in Sweden , the US , or many other parts of the world where NCSU faculty have research projects. Fellowship recipients are eligible to apply for up to $15,000 in research funds.
North Carolina State University has one of the largest and most comprehensive forestry programs in the USA . The Department is a recognized leader in sustainable forest management in the southeastern US and the tropics and sub-tropics of Latin America , Asia , and Africa . Research areas related to forest genetics and management include intensive plantation management, tree improvement and propagation, biotechnology, and conservation of genetic diversity.
Applying for the Nicholson Fellowship
Qualifications for the Nicholson Fellowship are Swedish citizenship, a university degree, strong letters of recommendation, and GRE and TOEFL scores. Successful applicants may come from a variety of disciplinary background, including forestry, biological sciences, ecology, and genetics.
The fellowship may begin in August or January of any year. Complete applications must be received by the NCSU Graduate School by March 1 by fall admission and by July 15 for spring admission. Applications may be submitted on-line through the university website. Note that the GRE and TOEFL are only offered a few times per year in Sweden , so you must plan ahead! If you will take the GRE in Sweden , you should register for the exam date in October to apply for the following fall, and for the exam date in March to apply for the following spring.
